On NetBSD, the default location is "/usr/pkgsrc", btw:

 * the collection works from any directory (e.g. i use one tree for
pkg development, and another one for doing bulk builds), /usr/pkgsrc
   is not hardcoded.
 * NetBSD by default installs pkgs into /usr/pkg, which can be changed
   by setting LOCALBASE=/usr/local (e.g.) in /etc/mk.conf.
While it is debatable that pkgs should go to /usr/local or not,
it's ensured that they _are_ relocatabled (at compile time) that
   way.

NetBSD - because Unix isn't just #include <linux.h>, i386, ILP32, ELF, ...!
