IIRC, NetBSD has both of the two RE improvements that OpenBSD put in
their make(1); and it would be equally trivial to put them in FreeBSD.
I'm sure they can be backported in Darwin (no idea about the rules
there, but I'm sure you know, that's why you're here ;-).
